Dishwasher Leaking? How to Find the Source
A dishwasher leak can be as simple as the wrong soap or as serious as a cracked part, and the difference shows up in where and when the water appears.
Quick answer
Most dishwasher leaks come from the door gasket, a loose or worn hose connection underneath, too many suds, or a worn pump seal. Turn off the water valve under the sink and the breaker first. Then note where the water appears and at which point in the cycle, because that tells you the source.

Do this right now
- Turn off the water supply valve under the kitchen sink (turn it clockwise).
- Switch off the dishwasher’s breaker.
- Soak up the water, and check the cabinet base and the floor next to it. On hardwood, dry it fully now; standing water stains and cups boards fast.
- If water reached the basement ceiling or an outlet, stop and call. Don’t run the dishwasher again.
Find where the leak starts
Put dry paper towels under the front edge and run a short cycle while you watch. Where and when the water shows up narrows it down:
| Where and when | Likely source |
|---|---|
| Front of the door, during washing | Door gasket, overloading, or a spray arm hitting something and spraying the door |
| Front, with a lot of suds | Regular dish soap or too much detergent |
| Under the door, near the bottom corners | Lower door seal or a worn door hinge |
| Underneath, during filling | Inlet valve or the supply line connection |
| Underneath, during draining | Drain hose connection or the drain pump |
| Underneath, all cycle long | Circulation pump seal, sump gasket, or a crack in the tub |
| Only when the door opens at the end | Steam, or a dishwasher that isn’t level |
Common causes and fixes
- Worn or dirty door gasket. Wipe it with warm soapy water and look for tears or flattened spots. A damaged gasket is one of the cheaper repairs.
- The wrong detergent. Hand dish soap foams up and pushes suds out the door. Use only dishwasher detergent, and only the amount the manual says.
- Not level. If the dishwasher tilts forward, water runs to the door. A tech can adjust the legs.
- Loose supply line or drain hose. Fittings loosen with vibration over the years.
- Failing inlet valve. It can drip even when the dishwasher is off.
- Pump or sump seal. Leaks from underneath during the whole cycle usually point here.
- Cracked tub. Less common, and usually the point where replacing the dishwasher makes more sense.
The Naperville angle
In kitchens built around 1990, the shut-off valve and the supply line under the sink are often original. Old multi-turn valves weep around the stem, and older supply lines get brittle. When we replace a part on an older install, we check the valve and line too, because a new pump won’t help if the connection feeding it is about to fail.
Bosch E15 and leak sensors
Many dishwashers have a float or sensor in the base pan that shuts the machine down when it detects water. On a Bosch or Thermador, that’s error E15; on a Samsung it’s LC or LE.
You can sometimes clear an E15 by draining the base pan, but that only resets the sensor. The leak that tripped it is still there, and it will come back. Find and fix the source first.
What a leak repair costs
Nationally, leak repairs run about $50 to $300 with parts and labor, and a door gasket about $50 to $150. Our Naperville prices: gasket [PRICE], hose or valve [PRICE], pump seal [PRICE]. See the full cost guide.
When to call a technician
- Water appears underneath, not just at the door
- It leaks even when the dishwasher is off
- It shows E15, LC or another leak code that comes back
- The floor or subfloor is soft or stained
- You can’t find the source after a test cycle

Leaking: common questions
Can I still use a leaking dishwasher?
Not until you know the source. Even a small leak underneath can rot the subfloor or damage the ceiling below without showing much on the floor.
Why does my dishwasher leak only sometimes?
Intermittent leaks usually come from overloading, a spray arm hitting a tall item, too much detergent on certain loads, or a door gasket that only lets water past at one spot.
Will homeowners insurance cover dishwasher leak damage?
Policies differ. Many cover sudden water damage but not slow leaks or the dishwasher itself. Take photos and check with your insurer before repairs.
Is a leaking dishwasher worth repairing?
Usually, yes: gaskets, hoses and valves are affordable fixes. A cracked tub on an older machine is the main exception. See is it worth repairing?.
