Dishwasher Not Cleaning Dishes? Fixes That Actually Work
Poor cleaning is usually a maintenance or loading issue, not a broken dishwasher. Here’s how to tell the difference before you pay for a visit.
Quick answer
When a dishwasher stops cleaning well, the cause is usually a dirty filter, blocked spray-arm holes, the wrong detergent amount, an empty rinse-aid dispenser, or water that isn’t hot enough. Fix those first. If dishes still come out dirty, the circulation pump, wash motor or inlet valve may be failing.

Food left on dishes vs. film left on dishes
| What you see | Usually caused by |
|---|---|
| Food stuck on, especially top rack | Blocked spray arm, upper arm not spinning, tall items blocking it |
| Gritty residue | Dirty filter recirculating debris |
| White film that wipes off with vinegar | Mineral deposits from the water; rinse aid fixes most of it |
| Cloudy film that won’t come off | Etching: permanent damage to the glass, often from too much detergent with soft water |
| Detergent left in the cup or a pod not dissolved | Dispenser blocked by a dish, or water not getting hot enough |
| Everything dirty, arms never spin | Circulation pump or wash motor not running |
Fix it yourself first
- Clean the filter. Most newer dishwashers, including Bosch, use a manual filter instead of a food grinder, so it needs cleaning about once a month.
- Clear the spray arms. Pop them off (most twist or unclip), rinse them, and poke out blocked holes with a toothpick.
- Check that the arms spin freely and nothing on the bottom rack, like a pan handle, blocks them.
- Load for water flow. Dirty sides face the center, nothing nested, tall items at the sides, and the detergent door unblocked.
- Run the hot water at the sink until it’s hot before starting, so the first fill isn’t cold.
- Use fresh detergent in the amount the manual recommends. Old powder clumps; too much leaves film.
- Fill the rinse aid. It’s not optional on most modern dishwashers; it drives drying and spot-free glasses.
- Run a cleaning cycle with a dishwasher cleaner, empty, on the hottest setting.
Naperville water and mineral film
Naperville’s water is Lake Michigan water, bought from the City of Chicago and delivered through the DuPage Water Commission. The Naperville Water Department puts its hardness at [HARDNESS] grains per gallon ([DATE CONFIRMED]). That level leaves some mineral film and scale over time, especially without rinse aid.
Mineral film is a maintenance issue, not a reason to replace a dishwasher. Keep rinse aid topped up, clean the filter monthly, and run a cleaning cycle every month or two. If you have a water softener, use less detergent; soft water plus too much detergent is what causes permanent etching.
When it’s a failing part
- Circulation pump or wash motor: you hear it fill and drain, but there’s no spraying sound.
- Inlet valve: the tub barely fills, so there isn’t enough water to wash.
- Heating element: dishes come out cold and greasy; on a Bosch, error E09.
- Detergent dispenser: the door doesn’t open, so the detergent stays in the cup.
- Wash arm seal or bearing: the arm wobbles or doesn’t build pressure.
What it costs to fix
Most cleaning problems cost nothing to fix. When it is a part, a wash motor runs about $200 to $500 nationally with parts and labor; dispenser and inlet-valve repairs cost less. Our Naperville prices: [PRICE]. See the cost guide or book a diagnosis.
Not cleaning: common questions
Why is my dishwasher leaving white residue?
Usually mineral deposits from hard water, or detergent that didn’t rinse away. Add rinse aid, use the right amount of detergent, and clean the filter.
Why does my top rack come out dirty?
The upper spray arm is blocked, not spinning, or something tall on the bottom rack is in its way. Clean the arm and check its path.
Are dishwasher pods better than powder?
Pods measure the dose for you, which helps avoid overdosing. Any good detergent works if the dose is right and the dispenser opens. Pods don’t dissolve well in cold or short cycles.
Should I rinse dishes before loading?
Scrape, don’t rinse. Modern detergents work on food soil; completely clean dishes can actually wash worse with some detergents.
